 GEAR UP 2013-2014

The mission of the GEAR UP / EIP program is to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills for their academic preparation, with the goal of encouraging and promoting postsecondary education as an option for their future. The program focuses on academic enrichment, academic skill building, career exploration, and provides support for students trying to develop their abilities and talents.  To achieve those aims GEAR UP / EIP offers a workshop once a month after school on a Wednesday, focused on personal development and academic preparedness. Several times a semester the program also offers students field trip opportunities to various colleges and universities around the state. Additionally, this year the program will have an increased focus on providing community service opportunities. While GEAR UP / EIP has an overarching goal of reducing the academic achievement gap, it is important to remember that the program is open to ALL students that attend any of our target schools.

The GEAR UP / EIP office is also consistently striving to improve parental outreach. The statistics are clear in showing us that students with high parental involvement typically display increased academic achievement. With that in mind, our goal is to get to know all of the GEAR UP / EIP parents, and to make this program as inviting and engaging for parents as possible.

The plans for this year really depend on the GEAR UP / EIP participants. We in the GEAR UP / EIP office think that getting suggestions from the program’s students and parents—the people that are affected by the program most—will provide us with invaluable insight as to how GEAR UP / EIP should develop. Accordingly, we want as much input and feedback as possible. What do parents want to see happen for their children? What do students want to get out of this program? Over the course of this school year, we hope to address those kinds of constructive concerns.

If you would like to enroll your student in GEAR UP / EIP feel free to contact the GEAR UP / EIP office, and we will send you a registration form. Our kickoff meeting will take place in September, which students and parents can attend to find out more information about the program. Parents and students can reach GEAR UP / EIP staff by phone at (608) 267-0486, or by email at kerry.johnson@dpi.wi.gov. Don’t hesitate to contact us with your questions, concerns and ideas. We want to hear from you!
