MMSD High Schools Kick Off Spring Musical Season
Madison Metropolitan School District’s (MMSD) four comprehensive high schools are preparing to launch their highly anticipated spring musicals.
Kicking things off is Vel Phillips Memorial High School, with its production of “Something Rotten,” running Feb. 7, 8, 14 and 15. The school enters the season on a high note after winning a Jerry Award for Outstanding Performance following last year’s production of “The Addams Family.”
La Follette High School will perform a classic rendition of “Chicago: Teen Edition” Feb. 28, March 1 and 6–9. West High School will enchant audiences with Disney’s “The Little Mermaid”, with showings on Feb. 28, March 1 and 6–8. Rounding out the season, East High School will bring “Sister Act" to the stage May 2–4 and 8–10—tickets will be available on West’s and East’s websites in the coming weeks.
Tickets are available online and in-person. The theater spaces at La Follette, Vel Phillips Memorial and West high schools all received crucial renovations as part of the community’s support of the 2020 facilities referendum. East High’s theater received major upgrades as part of the 2015 referendum.
“Musical theater is a hands-on experience that allows students to showcase their brilliance not only in the classroom, but up on stage,” said Cindy Green, assistant superintendent of teaching and learning. “We are excited to be able to provide these opportunities to our scholars and to invite the community to see them perform.”
